What the Holy Spirit does for Us (5)

The Holy Spirit is Christ’s personal Representative on earth, and it will be seen that His is to convict the sinner, assures the converted, and guide and sanctify the Christian.

What are some of the things that indicate the Holy Spirit to be the third person of the Godhead? John 16:13
“13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” (See also verses 7-13 for context, Matthew 28:19 defines the Godhead.)

What does He reprove the world of? John 16:8
“8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”

Is it safe to refuse or neglect His instruction? Matthew 12:31-32
“32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” (See also Hebrews 3:7-8, when the Holy Spirit speaks to you, “harden not your hearts”)

While He reproves the world, what is He a guarantor (earnest) of for they who already believe? Ephesians 1:13-14
“13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” (See also 2 Corinthians 1:21-22)

Those who obey the voice of the Holy Spirit, what do they become and how? Romans 8:14-16
“14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” (See also, 1 John 5:13, through the Holy Spirit Christians know they have eternal life through Christ.)

What does Jesus compare the Holy Spirit to?John 7:37-39
“37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

As plants, what are we continually in need of? Isaiah 44:3-4
“3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: 4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.” (See also Isaiah 5:7 and 1 Peter 1:24, we as people are compared to plants.)

What is the purpose of receiving the Holy Spirit, here symbolised as rain water? James 5:7
“7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.”

The fruit of the Spirit Of God is a Christ-like character, what is it like? Galatians 5:22-2
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” (See also verses 19-21 for the opposite, the work of the flesh.)

The works of the flesh is in opposition to the fruit of the Spirit, what is it like? Galatians 5:19-21“19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

What is the end goal of the work of the Holy Spirit in which He will continue till we reach? Matthew 5:48
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

What is the Spirit’s work called whereby we receive more and more of His fruit, and what is His instruction?1 Peter 1:2, 14-16
“2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. … 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (Conversation is not mare talk, but the whole deportment of a person in life.)

When God transforms us through sanctification, what should be our contribution and attitude? Philippians 2:12-15
“12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”

Through sanctification, what does God enable us to delight in? Psalm 40:8
“8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” (See also, Hebrews 10:15-17 and Philippians 1:6, how He puts His in our hearts and completes that work, only as we allow Him.)

What does God give us to do His will? John 1:12
“12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

What is indicating that sanctification is teamwork between God and us? Colossians 1:28-29
“28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.”

Having been a Christian for many years, did Paul consider himself perfect, or in no more need of continued sanctification? Philippians 3:12-15
“12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.”

What is the Holy Spirit essentially doing for us sinners? Ezekiel 36:26-27
“26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” (See also Acts 5:32, God gives the Holy Ghost to those who obey Him.)

What sort of mind will hinder the process of sanctification, being against the the law of God, that leads to mental unrest and death? Romans 8:4-8
“4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”
